I borrowed a snazzy webcam from SIE headquarters to take some footage of the Enterprise Expo, which was held in June. We’d worked for months to put the event together, to showcase 50 companies founded by University of Edinburgh students, staff and alumni. I was determined to get some of it on film so we’d have a record of how it turned out.

It took me hours of struggling with outdated versions of iMovie and sluggish machines to produce my two-minute magnum opus. I hope you enjoy it. Any movie-making tips for future endeavours are welcomed, as I anticipate I shall be doing many more.

Edinburgh hosts many thriving communities of entrepreneurs—student groups, tech groups and business groups meet regularly, and there are a host of events for anyone who is interested.

I go to loads of these events for work and personal interest. This week has been the busiest so far this year. I met tons of people and learned about dozens of interesting companies.

One highlight: Patrick Hickey and his company Nipht (pronounced “nifty!”).

Patrick has explored many commercial endeavours, from homemade firecrackers to custom LED displays. His current work is perhaps the most fascinating: Making grow-your-own mushroom kits. These are literally just coming to market. Patrick had a few made up in time for this week’s Enterprise Expo.

Very soon, you will be able to purchase a small box of glow-in-the-dark mushroom spores to grow in your own home! These are not edible and are not hallucinogenic. Don’t buy them to eat them or get high. They are, however, unbelievably cool.

In addition, Patrick has also said that he has an edible (non-glowing) version of the mushroom pack coming soon. You can place it on your windowsill next to your herbs.

Who thinks of these things? Who develops a process to make mushrooms grow like houseplants anywhere in the world? Apparently Patrick. I can’t wait.
